Madison Clutch Sewalong - Day 2

Hopefully you all had time to get your supplies in order.  We are going to start prepping our pieces and sewing today.

First up, cut your pieces according to the cut chart.  I chose to cut my handle tab out of cork, and my handle out of my main fabric.  I mostly followed directions for interfacing.  I did choose to interface my cork with SF 101.  I ended up using Decovil Light on the inside accent pieces which I cut out of my main fabric.  Steps 1-3 are mostly cutting and interfacing. I didn't have Soft and Stable, so I used Pellon foam.  Unfortunatly, my Bernina is in the shop, so I have to use the industrial machine to baste the foam on.  Usually, I baste foam on with a zig zag stitch as it mashes the edges of the foam so it is easier to sew, but the industrial only does a straight stitch.  I recommend you baste it with a zig zag stitch.

Step 3 tells you to fold and press the zipper tab piece.

Make sure you cut your corners on the main and lining pieces.

Next up is folding and pressing the tab and handle.  My tab is cork, so I drew a line down the middle of the tab then folded and glued the sides in and down.  

Finally, insert the D-Ring on the tab and topstitch.  Stitch as close as you can to the D-Ring.  A zipper foot helps here.

With your handle folded, pressed, and NOT top stitched - add the swivel clip on.  Then open up the ends and sewing them together - right sides together, 1/4" SA.  Look how gross my ironing board is.  EEWW.

Re-fold and press everything back into place and topstitch.  Now, position your swivel clip so that the seam is up against it.  The next photograph is not so good, sorry.  Hopefully you can see it well enough.

Stitch across as close as you can to the swivel clip.

That's it for today!  Hopefully, my machine comes back soon so I can have a zipper foot for the next steps!  Next time we will do steps 8-14.

What am I reading?  This is kinda wonky.  I am not a fan of 'the classics'. I hate old books (this is also kinda tongue in cheek as one of my most favorite stories is Beowulf).  Seriously, I try not to read anything OLD.  So, cruzing the internet the other day, I came upon a sewalong for a quilt insipred by Little Women.  I decided I needed to join the quiltalong (late), and I better read the book!  I grabbed the audiobook from the library. IT IS 19 HOURS LONG.  Seriously.  I am 8 hours in, and not really enjoying it.  All the things I hated growing up in a traditional household - all of the gender expectations placed on me - are on display in this book.  BUT, I'm reading it.  I am almost done cutting the pieces for the quilt.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven - by Mitch Albom - remains meh 

Listening to: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott - I will make it through, but I'm not happy about it.
